INFINITE MELODIES
As a Beijing-born artist, Xin Song studied Chinese folk artists’ centuries-old traditional techniques of paper-cutting, crocheting, and quilting. Through her own body of work, she not only finds inspiration from these popular traditions but also infuses with the ultimate Americana of the cosmopolitan of New York City where she has lived and worked for over 20 years, continuing to demonstrate her own contemporary and pop styles of mixed media paper cutting and quilting. Song’s work depicts her interest in women's labor, navigating life through pandemic struggles, the exploration of visual elements from her dreams, and the combination of material and art historical traditions of different cultures within one overall visual composition.
Xin Song was born in Beijing, China in 1970. In 1994, Song graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, China. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, and has maintained a studio at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts since 2010. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at museums, commercial galleries, and alternative spaces. Notable recent exhibitions include The Today Art Museum in Beijing, China, the Chengdu Biennale, The Rampa Art Center in Porto, Portugal, the Contemporary Art Museum of Crete at Rethymnon, Greece (2018), Venice Biennial (2017), Noyes Museum of Art of New Jersey (2017), Staten Island Museum (2016), Musée du Louvre, Paris (2014), National Art Museum of China (2013), Prow Art Space of the Flatiron Building (2012), and Paper Art Biennial in Sophia, Bulgaria (2011), among many other venues.
